Eating Disorders Sunshine Coast

Understanding Eating Disorders Sunshine Coast at Collective Health Co

At Collective Health Co, we are committed to addressing the complexities of eating disorders for individuals of all ages within our community on the Sunshine Coast. Eating disorders Sunshine Coast encompass a range of conditions that can significantly affect an individual’s relationship with food and body image, constituting serious mental health challenges that can cause considerable distress and physical harm.

What Are Eating Disorders?

Eating disorders are characterised by altered behavioural patterns regarding food and eating habits. At Collective Health Co, we have strategies to help treat several types of eating disorders including Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, and Other Specified Feeding and Eating Disorders (OSFED). These conditions often stem from a distorted self-image and lead to behaviours aimed at strictly controlling one’s physical appearance through food intake restriction, purging, excessive exercise, or laxative use. It’s crucial to understand that the core of these disorders is not vanity but rather an intense and often distressing preoccupation with body shape, weight, and size.

The Psychological Impact and Treatment

Eating disorders frequently coexist with other psychological symptoms such as depression, anxiety, perfectionism, and traits of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Many of these symptoms are exacerbated by, or directly result from, nutritional deficiencies or starvation. At our clinic, treatment initially focuses on restoring regular and adequate nutrition, which can rapidly alleviate many of the starvation-related symptoms. Only after addressing these immediate physical health concerns do we begin to tackle any coexisting psychological issues. This phased approach helps a comprehensive recovery, focusing first on urgent physical health needs before addressing broader mental health challenges.

Special Considerations in Eating Disorders

Among the less common but equally important conditions we treat are Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) and less frequently, PICA and rumination disorder. ARFID differs from other eating disorders as it lacks the body image concerns typical of anorexia and bulimia and often relates to sensory aversions or trauma associated with food. PICA, where individuals consume non-food items, is often linked to mineral deficiencies and resolves with appropriate nutritional treatment. Rumination disorder, mostly seen in children, involves the regurgitation of food that may be re-chewed, re-swallowed, or spit out.

Our Approach to Treatment

At Collective Health Co, we tailor our treatments to the individual, acknowledging that each person’s experience with an eating disorder is unique. Our Eating Disorders Sunshine Coast services incorporate evidence-based practices such as Cognitive Behavioural Enhanced for Eating disorders (CBT-e), Specialist Supportive Clinical Management (SSCM), Maudsley Family Based Treatment (MFBT), Adolescent focused therapy (AFT), Dialectic Behavioural Therapy (DBT) and Schema Therapy.
